Why You Should Refresh Your Makeup Regularly

Are you still using that old eyeshadow that you’ve had for 10 years, or maybe it’s an old mascara that’s been in a disused makeup bag? Many people are guilty of holding on to their makeup for longer than perhaps they should – but can this be
harmful to your skin?

Katarina Kozlikova, makeup expert and formulator at Look Fabulous Forever, shares her expert advice on why you shouldn’t continue to use old makeup, the harmful bacteria that could damage your skin and what expiration dates actually mean.

The Benefits of Updating Your Makeup Collection

1. Healthier Skin:

1. Healthier Skin:

Over time, makeup can become contaminated with bacteria and moulds. Using expired products can lead to skin irritation, redness, itching, or infections, especially for those with sensitive skin.

2. Clearer Complexion:

Out-of-date makeup can clog your pores, causing breakouts and blemishes. Updating your products helps maintain clear and glowing skin.

3. Better Performance:

Expired makeup often loses its efficacy. For instance, old mascara can become clumpy and ineffective, while outdated foundation may not blend well or provide the desired coverage.

4. Eye Saftey

Using expired eye makeup, such as mascara or eyeliner, increases the risk of eye infections like conjunctivitis and allergic reactions.

To minimize these risks, it's important to regularly check the PAO dates of your makeup products and replace them as needed. Storing your makeup in a cool, dry place can help extend its shelf life.

Understanding PAO

The Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on your cosmetics indicates how long a product remains safe to use after first opening. To find the recommended time to use the product, look for the PAO symbol printed on the product or its packaging which is image of an open jar, then a number followed by the letter M.

Protecting Your Skin as You Age

As we age, our skin becomes more delicate and susceptible to damage due to decreased collagen and a weakened internal structure. This makes it even more critical to avoid using expired or contaminated makeup, which can aggravate sensitive, ageing skin.

Katarina adds: “If you suspect that you have used expired makeup and experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use immediately and consult a health specialist. “You should always pay attention to all makeup use-by dates to avoid infection and skin irritation. Old or out-of-date products also will not perform optimally, and you may not achieve the desired makeup look.”

How Often Should You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?

Proper brush maintenance is essential for healthy skin and effective makeup application. Katarina shares her tips on cleaning makeup brushes:

Katarina: "Ideally, makeup brushes should be cleaned every time you use them. However, this may not be very realistic. Therefore, I recommend cleaning brushes used with liquid products, like foundation, daily. For brushes used with powder-based products, cleaning at least once a week is sufficient."

Regular cleaning removes bacteria and product buildup, ensuring smoother application and reducing skin irritation. Our Brush Cleaner refreshes and restores your brushes quickly and easily.
