A Hair Stylist's Top 5 Beauty Tips
for Older Women

In her 32 years as a makeup artist, Julia has worked on a wide variety of campaigns for magazines and advertising, as well as personal makeup for celebrities and high profile women including the Duchess of Cornwall. She has worked with Look Fabulous Forever for several years and knows our products very well! Here are 5 of her top tips for your hair...

1. Embrace The Changes!

Firstly, if you wish to - enjoy and embrace your natural colour
If you do colour your hair, the pigment from your colour can greatly reduce your sebum production - so try to use moisturising and hydrating products - and avoid any products with harsh chemicals to keep your hair in top condition

Mainly, a good haircut that’s youthful and flattering to your face shape can completely change the way you look and feel

2. Consider Your Styling

Use a delicate hand when styling, as older and grey hair has less protective layers

Use a hairbrush that is gentle, such as bamboo - this will help promote improved circulation, increased shine and reduce frizz

Use a root lifting spray on damp hair and gently dry the hair with a round brush lifting from the roots for extra volume

Velcro rollers can be used (on dry hair) to gently give the hair more volume while you do your makeup. A small amount of fine hairspray can be used to help keep the volume when they are removed!

3. Grey Hair Is Beautiful!

Softly styled grey hair is more flattering as we age than crisp over styled hair that looks ageing and damages the hair

Use products designed for your hair-type!

Grey, white, silver hair looks fabulous as our features age and skin tones change - so adapting to your new hair colour (especially if you have coloured your hair like me til 50!) is just as important as keeping your makeup and skincare updated

4. Always Protect!

Always use a heat protection spray before blow drying!

Use an oil, serum or leave in hair conditioner cream on damp or dry hair every day when in sun or if it feels dry through winter due to central heating

When in the sun I would always wear a hat to not only protect your face, but also you hair!

When swimming try to wear a swimming cap so that the chlorine doesn't yellow white hair and dry out highlights or any colour

5. Treat Yourself!

Treat yourself to some TLC...
The below can be done on either wet or dry hair.
1. Start at temples with small circular movements around this area and work up the side of your head
2. When you have reached the top of your head, use both hands to circle round the ears and down behind the ears to the neck
3. Then go up the neck into the back of the head. This should be releasing all the tight spots and starting to release any tension in the head and scalp
4. Use both hands, like you are shampooing but just massage all around the top of the head
5. Then finish with tapping all over the head, use all 10 fingers to tap away til the scalp is tingling. This will help to improve your circulation.
