This morning on the radio I heard Mary Beard (64) say ‘when my daughter and I go shopping together we can’t possibly shop in the same places for our clothes but we can at least shop for shoes together. After all, shoes fit everyone!’

As expected this topic is a very important one for older ladies (and many younger ones!). I used to wear wonderful high heels all the time until I broke my ankle at 42. Nothing has been the same since! My feet are not very wide but they are very painful - plantar fasciitis -so I need arch supports and plenty of padding, especially on the ball of the foot. My other problem is that my big toes seem to stick up and so many shoes press on them painfully. My sense of style does not allow for trainers - ugh - with dresses which is what I mostly wear. I have found Clarks Cloud steppers to be very good (mine have a small wedge). I still wear high heels with gel pads in the evenings on holiday. I would caution against ballet style shoes with no fastenings as you have to scrunch up your toes to keep them on and they are too flat. Boots in the winter are a godsend however.

It is often thought that bad shoes cause bunions but it is actually an inherited condition. Bad shoes do cause foot problems especially 'fallen arches' which require extra support

I too take Turmeric, cynically at first, but it REALLY works. Those stiff feet when I first get out of bed are a thing of the past. With feet no longer hurting it makes a huge difference to the shoes you can wear. Being 5' 9" ( I am 70 so taller than average for my generation) high heels never featured greatly in my wardrobe. I am eternally greatful to Princess Diana for making pumps 'the thing to wear' hence the great styles we have today

Love your articles. Want to try your products. Which would be the 3 you’d think were the best to invest for a strapped cash pensioner.
